One Year Record

My one-year record: Today marks exactly a year since I last went without a host, and had to find somewhere outside to spend the night. Since that mishap of a night in Montgomery, Alabama (one I never wrote about), there have been many days that I walked into without knowing if I’d be receiving any invitation at night’s end– yet across the rest of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, I’ve not had to spend a single night outdoors. Nor have I had to pay for a single night indoors. I’m SO thankful to the countless Road Angels that have made this possible!!

THANK YOU to Alvin and Diana (my current hosts), in addition to Kenneth Jones, Diane Oetting, Alex Goodman, Aben & Tamara Gentry, Julie Laurent, Rocío Sotomayor, Meagan Jain, Marianne Maddox Martin, Tri Zeke, Mark LaMountain, Antoine Jefferson, Buck & Beverly Barnett, Renee Dedomenico, Eleacia Padilla, Tim & Julie Richard, Daniel McCord, Bob Quackenbush, Stephen Cabinum, Mike & Mary Zucker, Gerry & Cheryl Kilpatrick, Tony & Megan, Winston & Harriet, Jerry & Ellen Roth, Leroy & Sylvia Bradshaw, Tom & Annie Reinke, Dawn Alba, Patty Kruszewski, Duncan & Christi, Jimy & Loyce, Cameron & Rachel, Adam & Natalie, Yuri & Anna, and so-so-SO many more of you across the miles and years!!!
Welcome George Mount Vernon

My body is tired and is ready for a non-walking day. So, after another 22km today, through threat of thunderstorms, it appears I’ll earn tomorrow off (yay!!). I walk today from Woodbridge to Mount Vernon, and I’m eager for the privilege of walking a handful of miles OFF of inhospitable Hwy 1 today… :)

It's common for many to ask me a variety of questions about what walking across America is like. An interesting twist came last night with young Max, who was explaining to me what it must be like to walk across America. (Loved it!) :)

"Don't take a picture," six-year-old Anton tells me, "if you take a picture, I'll kill you." "OK-- well how about I just take a picture of that egg you're holding?" "Oh, OK," Anton replies, smiling, and enthusiastically seeing the full pics once they're on the computer. (Enjoying a fun morning in Woodbridge before today's 22k to Mount Vernon gets underway.)

I wish Highway 1 were more hospitable to pedestrians and bikes. Too often I found myself sinking into a ditch or jumping a guard rail to evade fast-moving avalanches of traffic.

I love grass on a sunny day, but lately, resting in the grass always seems to bring unwelcome, latch-on visitors: ticks! I've carefully, toyfully tugged ticks from my skin in recent days-- which isn't too hard when they're freshly found. This one, however, would not let go for the life of him. When he doubled-down to quickly dig deeper on me, causing me to feel his stabbing jaws in the process, I don't know that he survived my reaction. I don't intentionally kill insects or spiders-- even mosquitoes just get brushed off-- however, if one doesn't let go and insists on quickly digging deeper into me, I'll take necessary steps to defend myself ~

Aquia Harbor

$30 + parts. On a VERY tight budget, I'm happy it's not more. On my way out of Fredericksburg, I felt the left side of the chariot weakening and wobbling. I looked down to find several spokes missing, and other spokes broken. The wheel was wobbling quite intensely, and I didn't want to walk any further on it. I desperately needed to find a bicycle repair shop-- as bike "mechanics" could also work mechanical wonders on my chariot. Luckily, I was still in a college town. Gary, a friendly local, directed me to Bike Works. Andre, resident bicycle expert at Bike Works, assessed the scenario, told me the prob should be able to be fixed, and got busy... He finished some 40 minutes later... ...Fascinating how the day ultimately unfolded: Andre ended up helping way beyond what was needed, charging me close to half of what the price otherwise would have been. Interestingly, these broken spokes and the bike shop visit set me on a course to encounter a series of souls over the next few hours who not only paid the bill for me, but paid for a few meals down the road for me as well. Amazing.

Today's 17 miles, mostly up Hwy 1, featured their fair fraction of danger, unfortunately. VA Hwy 1 absolutely SUCKS for any sort of human-powered transportation-- at least between Fredericksburg and Aquia Harbor, where I reached at the end of the day. Nonetheless, one of the most cautiously alert and tiring days of the walk ended upon meeting hosts Adam and Natalie in Aquia Harbor. (More on them soon...)

Goodbye Storms, Hello Road

Though I was set to walk to Stafford yesterday, the threat of severe storms kept much of the area somewhat paralyzed, and I accepted the invitation of hosts Cameron & Rachel to stay another night.
Despite the fact that the wide swath of storms didn’t strike as strongly as expected, they did end up killing at least two people in neighboring states, and flooding many roads as well. Fredericksburg ended up being only lightly touched. I could have made it to Stafford on foot, but I’m happy for not having taken the risk, and I’m very happy to have spent another night getting to know hosts Cameron & Rachel better– they’re AWESOME!
Today, I’ll return to the road. I face as many as 24 miles– if I walk all the way through Quantico to Dumfries. Of I could walk half that amount– to Stafford. I figure I’ll walk at least to Stafford, take a break, check in with my body, and decide from there to either seek shelter or move forward.
Here we go!!!

Farewell steps through fields of rural Virginia…

Where the sidewalk starts.    This was the first sidewalk of southern Fredericksburg– the southern edge of the greater DC metropolitan area.

Just before Fredericksburg,

On the southern edge of Fredericksburg, I walk past the Slaughter Pen Farm Battlefield.

from Wikipedia:

The historic, 205-acre Slaughter Pen Farm, a key part of the Fredericksburg battlefield, was the scene of bloody struggle on December 13, 1862. Over this ground Federal troops under Maj. Gen. George Meade and Brig. Gen. John Gibbon launched their assault against Lt. Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s Confederates holding the southern portion of the Army of Northern Virginia’s line at Fredericksburg. Despite suffering enormous casualties the Federal troops under Meade were able to temporarily penetrate the Confederate line and for a time represented the North’s best chance of winning the Battle of Fredericksburg. The fighting on this southern portion of the battlefield, later named the Slaughter Pen, produced 5,000 casualties.

Don, owner of Blackstone Coffee Company, in Fredericksburg, also lost his mother to cancer. He invited host Cameron Novak & me in for complimentary meals, and shared with us extensively regarding the story of his working history, including the birth of growth of Blackstone Coffee Company-- from his garage to a second store under construction. His fascinating story would make for a great documentary piece!

Community of Corbin…

Window-rattling thunderstorms were predicted for today, so the day’s mission was to reach as far as possible before the storms rolled in. I made it nearly 20k from Bowling Green up rural Virginia Hwy 2 to the community of Corbin.

Not far now... After nearly 4 years, this is the first sign I've seen giving me a distance to my committed goal. Funny that they don't even attach the "D.C." Thunderstorms were predicted for the afternoon, so today's mission was to get as far as possible before the storms!

Jimy & Loyce Edwards, my hosts for a pair of nights in Bowling Green, VA. I quickly found that this is the type of couple and community that I like spending at least a week with. That said, given a tighter schedule to reach DC by June 22, I was only able to spend a pair of happy nights with them both. Jimy is pastor of the local United Methodist Church.

The Macomber Quintet of Frog Level

Having met Christi W Macomber via the Ashland Farmers’ Market, and having spent time with friends of hers in Ashland, Christi and Family warmly invited me in to spend a night with them on my way up rural Virginia Hwy 301.
Being involved in the local farmers’ market, they prepared the most DELICIOUS dinner of brown rice and many fresh veggies, Asian style. In addition to walking the last portion of the walk with me yesterday, the Macombers sent me off with a handful of Christi’s famous baked goodies and homemade granola!! (Awesome!!!)

Having ventured a "lucky 7" miles out of my way to reach the more rural Hwy 301, I was super delighted to initially find what I've been sorely missing for over a thousand miles: roadside shoulders!!! Of course, the shoulders dried up within a couple of miles, but I definitely enjoyed them while they lasted!! I truly do look forward to more shoulders, sidewalks, and hike-n-bike paths as I approach DC on foot .

100 More Miles

Though I could reach the White House in as little as 92 walking miles from Hanover, Virginia, I’ll actually be walking well over a hundred more miles between Hanover and the White House. I’ll be adding miles not only to meet friends new & known through the course of the next hundred miles, I’ll also be taking some time to walk through George Washington’s Mount Vernon, through Old Town Alexandria, Arlington National Cemetery, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Georgetown, and many more places between here and the White House. Be it before or after arriving to the White House, I’ll also definitely walk to the Capitol, the MLK Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the greatest cultural jewel that D.C. has to offer: the Smithsonian!
Though I haven’t decided whether or not to walk into D.C. on Friday, June 21, or Saturday, June 22, I’ll soon be solidifying the final decision, and I invite anyone who wishes to contact and join me on foot across the Key Bridge into D.C.
